Northstars continue to win on the road

The Norman Northstars continued their road warrior ways on their latest stretch in southern Manitoba Nov. 13-15, opening and closing the three-game swing with wins to push their road record to .500 at 5-5.

The Northstars opened the trip with a 7-4 win over the now-mortal Winnipeg Thrashers, taking a 3-2 lead in the first and adding two goals each in the final two periods for their seventh win of the year. Wayne Folster and Cody Zulyniak had two goals apiece for Norman, while Quentin Holmes continued his hot streak with a goal and three assists. Team-leading sniper Roger Tagoona also had a goal for the Stars, as did Brett Ferguson. Parker Thomas, David Harrison, Jeremy Olynik and Sean Collins scored for the Thrashers. Ryan Delorme stopped 32 saves for his seventh win of the season.

On Saturday, the Northstars faced a former teammate in net, as Cory Nygaard, who spent the 2008-2009 season with the team, turned aside 28 shots to give his Winnipeg Wild a 6-2 victory. Delorme was heroic in the loss, making 50 saves as the Northstars were badly out-shot. The Wild scored two times in both the first and last minutes of the third period to break open what had been a tight game. Warren Callis scored twice for Winnipeg with Brandon Lauder, Brenden Leipsic and Brett Charette notching singles. Zulyniak and Dillan McCombie had the goals for the Northstars, who trailed 1-0 after the first and 2-1 after 40 minutes.

The road trip closed with a 6-2 win against the Interlake Lightning Nov. 15, as the Northstars scored two goals in each of the first two periods without allowing the Lightning any. Ferguson and Jaron Campbell each scored twice for the Northstars, while Holmes and Justin Valentino had one goal each. Mitchell Backhouse picked up his second win in his last two starts in net.

The Northstars now have 16 points and are third in the East Division, seven points back of the second-place Eastman Selects, but only four points ahead of the last-place Lightning.

The Northstars are in action at home this weekend, taking on the Parkland Rangers Nov. 20-21.
